• Emacs के नए उपयोगकर्ताओं के लिए सामान्य editing और programming environment सेटअप करने वाली .emacs setting file

→ लाइन-दर-लाइन explanation दिया गया है, इसलिए settings को समझना आसान है

• सेटिंग्स

→ साफ-सुथरे look and feel के लिए कुछ UI elements disabled

→ वर्तमान column number दिखाना

→ Wombat dark color theme लागू

→ cursor, search results, comments आदि को highlight करने के लिए color values लागू

→ line-end whitespace/NL दिखाना

→ tab की जगह spaces से indentation

→ पहली बार चलाने पर packages का automatic installation

→ Markdown mode install

• em command से Emacs server चलाकर edit करने की सुविधा भी supported

मैंने आख़िरी बार Emacs का इस्तेमाल शायद 1998 के आसपास किया था, जब Smallworld GIS engine में Magik नाम की भाषा से development करता था.

अब Magik के लिए भी Eclipse-आधारित IDE आ गया है, इसलिए काफ़ी कुछ बदल गया है.

उस दौर में Emacs से घुलना-मिलना मुश्किल था, फिर भी यह देखकर हैरानी होती थी कि इसमें सचमुच हर तरह की feature मौजूद थी.

मैं vim भी बस कभी-कभार cloud में जाकर थोड़ी देर के लिए config वगैरह edit करने में ही इस्तेमाल करता हूँ, इसलिए emacs हमेशा मेरे लिए एक अनजान क्षेत्र रहा है, लेकिन थोड़ी देर के लिए install करके hello.txt बनाकर देखा तो पहली छाप यह मिली कि यह काफ़ी हल्का है
